Metropolitan Water District Colorado River Aqueduct Tour
The Colorado River Aqueduct is a 242-mile system comprised of open canal, tunnels and siphons that carry millions of gallons of water a day from the Colorado River across the desert to the people of Southern California. Owned and operated by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the engineering marvel was built in the 1930s as the nation was emerging from the Great Depression, and immediately became an essential element in creating the vibrant Southern California we know today. The system works by pumping water up to higher elevations at five different points along the aqueduct, and then allowing it to flow downhill by gravity.
Join us as we visit the regional water system that delivers clean, reliable water to 19 million residents in Southern California. We will visit the Robert B. Diemer Water Treatment Plant in Yorba Linda, Lake Mathews in Riverside, Whitsett Intake Pumping Plant on Lake Havasu, and beautiful Copper Basin reservoir in the hills above Gene Camp. You will learn about the history of the Colorado River Aqueduct, how Colorado River water is managed, and what it takes to maintain this critical infrastructure that is nearing 100 years old.
