On April 2, ACC-OC and First 5 OC hosted the The OC Child Care Landscape Webinar: Challenges, Resources & Next Steps. The meeting reviewed key findings on Orange County’s early childhood care landscape, highlighting impacts on families, employers, and cities. Presenters shared that while there are over 200,000 children ages 0–5, licensed care meets only a fraction of demand—serving about 1 in 8 infants and toddlers and roughly 4 in 10 preschoolers—along with significant geographic and equity disparities. Economic impacts are substantial, with an estimated $5.47 billion in lost productivity, over 71,000 job losses annually, and child care costs approaching $40,000 per year for two children.
Discussion also focused on policy and local solutions. Presenters outlined how zoning, permitting, and state policies like SB 234 and AB 752 shape child care supply, along with best practices such as streamlined permitting, fee reductions, and co-locating child care with housing. First 5 OC highlighted ongoing efforts including workforce development, business support programs, cross-sector coordination, and targeted outreach. Cities were encouraged to leverage data and partnerships to expand access and address disparities. For more information on resources available visit First 5 Orange County.
